TECH TIPS

Tires are important to any vehicle.  But for a motorcycle, tires become a critical part because all forces such as acceleration, braking, and steering pass through two small patches to reach the road service.

Heat is a major foe of a tire.  A thick tire will generate more heat than a thin tire.  A tire with low air pressure generates more heat and can run excessively hot.

Regular tire inspection and maintenance is critical for a motorcycle rider's safety and good tire mileage.  Tires should be inspected weekly for cuts, cracks, punctures, and wear.

TIRE INSPECTION

  1. 1.    Check for the appearance of stress cracks in the tread grooves and sidewalks.
  2. 2.    Inspect the tread and sidewalls for damage caused by road hazard.
  3. 3.    Check for uneven tire wear.  This may be due to tire imbalance, over or under inflation, or fork and          suspension problems.
  4. 4.    Check tread depth.  Excessively worn tires are more susceptible to punctures and unsafe handling in wet conditions.  Wear indicator bars are designed to show 1/32 tread depth remaining.  I recommend replacement a 2/32 tread depth remaining.

TIRE PRESSURE

Tire pressure is probably the single most important maintenance procedure.  It is essential to check tire pressure on a regular basis (at least weekly) to ensure safe operation.

WHEEL BALANCING

A balanced wheel is important for a smooth ride and good handling, but also for long tire life.  An unbalanced wheel can produce excessive vibration at almost any speed.

TIRE CLEANING

Use a mild soap solution to clean sidewalls and rinse off with plain tap water.

WHAT ABOUT TIRE DRESSINGS?

These products make the rubber shiny but slick.  One thing you don't want a tire to be is slick.
